Wind check is a free, personal, non-commercial app that compares wind forecasts and live wind readings for kitesurf spots. It collects as little as it can. This page says what that is.
Without signing in
You can use the app without an account. Your spots, rideable wind range and theme are then kept only in your
browser's local storage, under the keys device:spots, device:settings,
theme, activeSpot and signInPromptDismissed. They never leave your
device. Clearing the site's data in your browser deletes them.
When you sign in with Google
- Google tells the app your Google account ID, name, email address and profile picture. You see this on Google's consent screen before anything is shared.
- The app saves your spots, rideable wind range, theme and the station you chart for each spot in a database (Upstash Redis), filed under your Google account ID.
- Your name, email address and profile picture are not saved in the database. They are kept only inside an encrypted session cookie in your browser, so the Settings screen can show who is signed in.
Cookies
The app sets only the cookies sign-in needs: a session cookie that keeps you signed in for up to 30 days, and short-lived cookies that protect the sign-in step. There are no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
Services that see some data
- Vercel hosts the app and keeps standard request logs, such as IP address and browser.
- Upstash stores the saved spots and settings of signed-in users.
- Google handles sign-in.
- OpenStreetMap serves the map tiles in the spot editor. Your browser loads them directly, so OpenStreetMap sees your IP address and the map area you view.
- Open-Meteo, SMHI, DMI and Sjöfartsverket (ViVa) provide the forecasts and measurements. The app's server asks them for data by spot coordinates and station; nothing about you is sent.
The app does not sell or share your data with anyone else.
Deleting your data
Signing out does not delete what is saved to your account. To have it deleted, email the developer contact address shown on Google's sign-in screen for Wind check, from the Google account you signed in with. Your saved data is deleted within 30 days.
